On Friday, October 17, 2025, 230 members of the Kona community gathered for a powerful evening of celebration, remembrance, and education at the red-carpet screening of Keeper of the Bay. The event, held at the Kona Elks Lodge, drew a vibrant mix of educators, ocean advocates, community leaders, and keiki — all united to celebrate the life and legacy of board member Aunty Cindi Punihaole — a fierce protector of Kahaluʻu Bay through the ReefTeach program and a guiding light for place-based education in Hawaiʻi. We hosted this event to unite community and education leaders and spark creative ways to inspire and educate Hawaiʻi’s keiki in environmental stewardship. Produced by Dr. Christine Zalewski, Dear Ocean founder, and directed by Ashley Lofaso, the Emmy-nominated documentary amplifies Aunty Cindi’s message of kuleana (responsibility) and aloha ʻāina (love of the land and sea). From the moment the red carpet rolled out, it was clear this was no ordinary screening. Guests were greeted Hollywood-style with warm aloha and flashing cameras as beloved Big Island radio personality Eddie O. emceed the red-carpet experience — introducing our guests as they arrived with grace, gratitude, and a shared love for the ocean. These honored guests included the cast and crew of the film, featured community members, and several other distinguished contributors. Following the screening, community members shared stories, paid tribute, and engaged in conversations about how to promote, support, and continue Cindi’s work. Young learners, seasoned activists, and elders alike spoke of the importance of hands-on education, respect for Indigenous wisdom, and the critical need to protect coastal ecosystems like Kahaluʻu Bay from overuse, pollution, and climate change. The night wasn’t just about celebration — it was a fundraising success powered by the community. 29 local artists and small businesses generously donated to the silent auction which raised $20,000! In the days surrounding the event, the film’s impact was shared even further. Over 250 students attended special screenings at Hualālai Theatre. As Cindi shared: “They were so excited and inspired after the film and asked very good questions. One wanted to know how to sign up for ReefTeach. My vision coming true.”
